We’ve Tried So Many Ice Makers—This Is the One

The nugget ice maker that finally keeps up with our big family.
I have bought more ice makers than I care to admit.
With a big blended family, we go through a lot of ice. And for the longest time, every countertop ice maker we tried had some kind of problem. It didn’t make ice fast enough. The ice wasn’t that great. It was loud. Or we’d use everything it made and then spend the rest of the day waiting for it to catch back up.
Then we got the GE Profile Opal 2.0 Nugget Ice Maker.
And this is the one.
It actually keeps up.
This is probably the biggest compliment I can give an ice maker.
Our house can go through some ice, and this is the only machine we’ve tried that can actually keep up with us. It makes ice quickly and consistently enough that we’re not constantly checking to see if another batch is ready.
And the ice itself is GOOD.
It’s that soft, crunchy nugget ice that makes every drink somehow taste better. If you’re an ice person, you know exactly what I mean.
And it doesn’t drive me crazy sitting on the counter.
This matters more than you might think.
If I’m giving up permanent counter space for an appliance, I want it to look good—and the Opal does. It feels much more polished than a lot of countertop ice makers we’ve owned.
It’s also surprisingly quiet. Since ours gets used constantly, I really appreciate that I don’t have to listen to an obnoxiously loud machine running in the kitchen all day.
It keeps the ice cold, it’s efficient, and most importantly, it just works.
Is it cheap? No.
There are definitely less expensive ice makers out there.
We’ve bought them.
😂
And that’s actually part of the reason I’m so comfortable recommending this one. We’ve tried other machines that technically did the same thing, but they couldn’t make enough ice, couldn’t keep up with our family, or the ice just wasn’t nearly as good.
I’d rather spend more on something that works well and gets used every single day than keep replacing cheaper versions I’m not happy with.
The Magpie verdict…
Would I buy it again? Absolutely.
If you barely use ice, you probably don’t need to spend this much on an ice maker.
But if you’re an ice family—especially a big one—and you’ve been disappointed by countertop ice makers that can’t keep up, this is the one I’d recommend.
